My Cult Movie: “I wanted Christopher Atkins as my boyfriend…”

*contains spoilers

Name: Bec.
Age: 49
Occupation: Marketing and Communication Agency Owner
Favourite Movie: The Blue Lagoon (1980)
Starring: Christopher Atkins, Brooke Shields and Leo McKern

First Saw It: I was ten and saw it at the movies but I don’t remember who I was with.

Plot: A couple of children shipwrecked on a tropical island become sexually aware of each other as they grow to be teenagers.

Bec Says: After I first saw the movie, I cut out all of the newspaper ads and put them on my wall and I bought the soundtrack album because of the cover. I was obsessed.

I guess the reason I like it is because it was a coming of age film. It was my first love story and Christopher Atkins was so gorgeous. He had that Adelaide surfie look that everyone was in love with.

When I got the video-tape I paused it a lot, especially the waterfall scene. I’ve seen it so many times it’s ridiculous. I wanted to be Brooke Shields. The irony of the film was they were cousins and she was underage… They couldn’t cast a fourteen-year-old and a nineteen-year-old today.

I guess it was the innocence of them falling in love and it was so innocent compared to what kids are watching these days which are so drug fuelled and sexual. I loved Leo McKern as he was an endearing, grumpy, smelly old sailor but he had a heart of gold. I still own a copy and I only watched it with my daughter recently… She was very uncomfortable watching it with me.

The film always made me want to go to Turtle Island in Fiji where it was made but I haven’t been there yet… I haven’t seen the sequel and didn’t even know there was one.

I wanted Christopher Atkins as my boyfriend!
