Occupation: High School Student
Favourite Movie: 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
First Saw It: When I was about ten with my mum at home on DVD
Starring: Julia Stiles, Heath Ledger, Larisa Oleynik and Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Plot: An overprotective father won’t let his younger daughter date unless her hostile older sister has a date as well. So someone is paid to take her out. It is an updating of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew.
Maliah Says: I have seen this film about thirty times. I like that there’s different storylines that sort of connect. There’s a guy that likes a girl but she can’t date because her parents are strict. She can only date if her older sister dates… I just like the romance about it – between Bianca and the guy and Heath Ledger and her older sister. It’s just a fun little romantic comedy. I don’t get sick of it and if I have no movie to watch I think – 10 Things I Hate About You – I’ll watch that again! I haven’t memorised any words or lines and watching it again is like the first time. I’m not a big Heath Ledger fan, but he’s a good actor. I like Joseph Gordon-Levitt better, he’s really cute in the film. It seems a bit cheesy now that my sense of humour has matured. When the older sister finds he’s paid to take her out, that was sad. Julia Stiles was obviously not a teenager, she was older, but she did it really well. The title is because her assignment was to write a poem in her own style and she wrote 10 Things I Hate About You, except for the last one which she wrote she didn’t hate him. I like the ending when they get together but I wouldn’t have gone there if I was her.
